Tutoring Success Story: How One Tutor Helped a Student Go from Failing to Thriving

A heart-to-heart conversation with a tutor is what it took for one struggling student to turn her grades from failing to straight A’s. 

Last school year, MTP tutor Araceli began working with Connecting Waters student, Yaretzi. At the time, Yaretzi was not succeeding in her classes and was struggling to find interest in her studies, resulting in low scoring grades. 

“It was really hard to pull her in as far as having her be interested in the subjects that we worked on,” Araceli said.

Araceli got to know Yaretzi’s habits, the good and the bad, and was able to work on those during online tutoring sessions. Everything changed, however, when Araceli and Yaretzi had a heart-to-heart. 

“I gave her a motivational speech in regards to how academics play a huge role in the outcome of the choices in her life and why it’s important for her to take academics seriously,” Araceli said. “It was a very heartfelt moment.” 

After that, Araceli noticed a change in Yaretzi. She became more excited to attend tutoring and talk to Araceli about her academic struggles. 

“She just slowly started caring more. It wasn’t that she wasn’t capable, she just wasn’t interested. Sometimes that’s all it takes. The child is capable of doing the work, they just need to make sure they find interest in it one way or another,” Araceli said. 

When this school year began, Yaretzi requested to tutor with Araceli again. Araceli was excited to work with her.

“She came in just ready to conquer the school year. She needed little to no assistance. I would show her a concept one time and she was able to understand the concept and move forward,” Araceli said. 

Araceli noticed Yaretzi was becoming a self-sufficient student, to the point where Yaretzi no longer needed tutoring services. 

As expected, Araceli said she felt a mixture of “I’m going to miss her” alongside “I’m so proud of her.”

“This is the goal, to have her be able to work independently to where she doesn’t need someone to consistently be pushing her,” she said. 

Yaretzi’s mother, Reyna, is impressed with the change she noticed in her daughter’s academic performance. 

“The changes were gradual. When Yaretzi started tutoring, she had very low grades and a lot of F’s. I saw the help that Araceli gave her, and Yaretzi started getting better grades. Not only that, but she became independent and understood what she was learning better. The tutoring helped her a lot,” Reyna said. 

Seeing the students for who they are as people and not just seeing them as students is something that Araceli truly believes makes a difference when it comes to having an impact in their lives. Araceli starts her tutoring sessions by asking the student questions about their week.

“Get to know them and find interest in them. Each one of them has something different to tell you and a different story, and I think they’re all special in their own way,” Araceli shared. 

Reyna is very happy to see her daughter excelling in school and becoming an independent learner. She thanks Araceli for all she did to help Yaretzi. 

“Araceli, thank you so much. We are grateful for your hard work, the dedication you had with my daughter, and for all the support you gave her. You were always ready with a good attitude to help her,” Reyna said.

Una conversación de corazón a corazón con una tutora fue todo lo que necesitó una estudiante que estaba teniendo dificultades para transformar sus calificaciones de reprobatorias a puras A.

El año escolar pasado, la tutora de MTP, Araceli, comenzó a trabajar con Yaretzi, una estudiante de Connecting Waters. En ese momento, Yaretzi no estaba teniendo éxito en sus clases y tenía dificultades para encontrar interés en sus estudios, lo que resultaba en calificaciones muy bajas.

“Fue muy difícil lograr que se interesara en las materias que trabajamos,” dijo Araceli.

Araceli se tomó el tiempo de conocer los hábitos de Yaretzi, tanto los buenos como los no tan buenos, y pudo trabajar en ellos durante las sesiones de tutoría en línea. Sin embargo, todo cambió cuando Araceli y Yaretzi tuvieron una conversación profunda y sincera.

“Le di un discurso motivacional sobre cómo lo académico juega un papel muy importante en el resultado de las decisiones en su vida y por qué es importante que tome sus estudios en serio,” dijo Araceli. “Fue un momento muy emotivo.”

Después de eso, Araceli notó un cambio en Yaretzi. Comenzó a sentirse más entusiasmada por asistir a las tutorías y por hablar con Araceli sobre sus dificultades académicas.

“Poco a poco empezó a preocuparse más. No es que no fuera capaz, simplemente no estaba interesada. A veces eso es todo lo que se necesita. El estudiante es capaz de hacer el trabajo, solo necesita encontrar interés en ello de una forma u otra,” explicó Araceli.

Cuando comenzó este año escolar, Yaretzi solicitó volver a recibir tutoría con Araceli. Araceli estaba emocionada de trabajar nuevamente con ella.

“Llegó lista para conquistar el año escolar. Necesitaba muy poca o ninguna ayuda. Le mostraba un concepto una sola vez y era capaz de entenderlo y avanzar,” dijo Araceli.

Araceli notó que Yaretzi se estaba convirtiendo en una estudiante autosuficiente, al punto de que ya no necesitaba los servicios de tutoría.

Como era de esperarse, Araceli comentó que sintió una mezcla de emociones: “la voy a extrañar” y, al mismo tiempo, “estoy muy orgullosa de ella”.

“Este es el objetivo: que pueda trabajar de manera independiente y que no necesite que alguien la esté impulsando constantemente,” dijo.

La madre de Yaretzi, Reyna, está impresionada con el cambio que ha visto en el desempeño académico de su hija.

“Los cambios fueron graduales. Cuando Yaretzi comenzó la tutoría, tenía calificaciones muy bajas y muchas ‘F.’ Vi la ayuda que Araceli le dio, y Yaretzi empezó a obtener mejores calificaciones. No solo eso, sino que se volvió independiente y comprendía mejor lo que estaba aprendiendo. La tutoría la ayudó muchísimo,” dijo Reyna.

Ver a los estudiantes como personas y no solo como estudiantes es algo que Araceli cree firmemente que marca la diferencia cuando se trata de impactar sus vidas. Araceli comienza sus sesiones de tutoría preguntándoles a los estudiantes sobre cómo fue su semana.

“Conócelos y muestra interés en ellos. Cada uno tiene algo diferente que contar y una historia distinta, y creo que todos son especiales a su manera,” compartió Araceli.

Reyna está muy feliz de ver a su hija sobresalir en la escuela y convertirse en una estudiante independiente. Agradece a Araceli por todo lo que hizo para ayudar a Yaretzi.

“Araceli, muchas gracias. Estamos muy agradecidos por tu arduo trabajo, la dedicación que tuviste con mi hija y por todo el apoyo que le brindaste. Siempre estuviste lista para ayudarla con una buena actitud,” dijo Reyna.
