From Struggling to Soaring: One Homeschool Family’s Journey to Math Success

Melinda’s son, Elijah, was testing out at a 5th grade level in math when he was in 7th grade. That’s when she knew he needed extra support. 

Elijah is homeschooled through Ocean Grove Charter School, one of My Tutoring Partners’ partner schools. Ocean Grove Charter recommended Melinda use My Tutoring Partners to help Elijah improve his math skills. He started online tutoring two to three times a week and instantly became more comfortable with math, Melinda shared. 

“Now (in 10th grade) he is at grade level and this entire time has maintained an A or B in his math program,” Melinda said. 

Elijah’s tutor, Amelia, has been with My Tutoring Partners since 2016 and has tutored Elijah for the last two years. Melinda said Amelia genuinely cares about helping Elijah and knows how to connect with him.

“The depth of her knowledge and the way she can get him to understand math and continuously coach him on it is amazing. I don’t have that patience and definitely don’t have the skills, but she does,” Melinda said.

“Having a tutor that can come on and just explain everything in depth is amazing. The option for multiple days a week just eases my mind because I can’t help him with his homework, so I feel less useless in that subject because I know I have somebody to help him,” Melinda said. 

Melinda said that when homeschooling, it is helpful to have a second set of eyes and a different perspective on any subject. 

“Homeschooling is difficult enough. We choose to homeschool, however we don’t have to struggle with it. We’re not going to be 100% in every subject and this (My Tutoring Partners) is a resource that is available,” Melinda said.
